The San Bernardino County Museum is recruiting volunteers to work in the Exploration Station Live Animal Gallery. Volunteers must be at least 14 years old and must be able to commit to two shifts and 8 hours per month. The museum seeks youth and adult volunteers for shifts on weekday mornings and weekend afternoons. “We need serious, committed volunteers to continue making the Exploration Station a popular attraction for visitors,” said Jolene Redvale, curator of education and live animal collection manager. “Our volunteers not only care for the animals, but also interact with the public, making a visit to the County Museum extra special.” Those who are retired, interested in careers working with animals, or personally committed to learning more about live animal husbandry are encouraged to apply. The application deadline is 5 p.m. Jan. 16. Mandatory training workshops begin on Jan. 24. A standard volunteer application and a mandatory supplemental application are available by contacting Redvale at 909-798-8610 or jredvale@sbcm.sbcounty.gov. Redvale emphasizes learning among volunteers, and supports their work with ongoing training and skill development that will help volunteers seeking careers working with live animals. “Volunteering here has been a rewarding opportunity to meet and greet both animals and visitors alike,” said Jill Quinnell, an Exploration Station volunteer of 18 months. “It’s really enhanced my retired life. Everyone should have the chance to make such a worthwhile contribution to their community.”
