Blood Shortage Drives Blood Donations

On July 18 the Arrowhead Regional Medical Center and Life-Stream Blood Bank held one of several blood drives. Event organizers shared that these blood drives are important as they help ensure that those in need of blood transfusions can get the resources they need to be able to heal. In the constant effort of fighting the blood shortage, drives are held wherever they can get permission, be it a school, university, church, or hospital. The process is very simple. A donor is screened, to make sure there are no problems, then they are laid down on a bed within the bus or box truck to have their blood drawn. Afterwards, they are taken to a tent to recover with juice and a light snack. Recovery takes about 15 minutes. The blood will taken to a lab for analysis, where they will identify its type. “We’re in such short supply we need everything,” said Melissa Demers, a staff member, in regards to their need for blood types. “We’re hoping for 26, usually we get pretty close.” With four donors within the first five minutes of the blood drive beginning, they were on their way to reaching that goal.
