Holidays are a happy time of year, but can be a dangerous for the family pet. The Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley would like you to be aware of important safety tips to help keep your pet healthy, safe and happy during the holiday season: • Do not feed your pet leftovers from the holiday table. Your pet should stick to their regular diet throughout the entire year. • Make sure to keep candy and other holiday treats out of reach! • If you have Christmas plants in the home, keep them out of the way of animals. Mistletoe, poinsettia and holly berries are poisonous. • Be careful when decorating. Tinsel and ornaments can be a hazard to your pet. If swallowed they can perforate the intestines. Gingerbread houses can be especially dangerous with candy and toothpicks in/on them. • During any holiday party, provide your pets with a quiet spot in the house where they can relax and be out of the mainstream of traffic. This will prevent your pet from running outside with guests coming and going. • Get your pet microchipped and have your pet’s collar and ID tags on every day! This is especially important during holidays where a pet can get out of the house unexpectedly. • Keep contact information for your pet’s regular veterinary office, as well as the closest 24 hour emergency clinic on your refrigerator! Please note the following closure dates this holiday season. The HSSBV closes every year during the Christmas & New Year holidays so that staff and volunteers many enjoy the season with their family and loved ones. This year we will be closing early due to important renovation on our building from Friday, Dec. 18 – Monday, Jan. 4, 2016. We will Re-open to the public on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016.
