Dr.G Brings Festive Cheer to the Streets

Last week, one might have noticed a tall man, wearing a fuzzy, well-dressed costume standing at the corner of Valley and La Cadena waving to all of the passerbys. Interestingly, that same individual was seen a few days earlier at the Sombrero Market on La Cadena and N Street.

For some, this unusual sight might have raised a few questions, but, for most everyone in the City of Colton, this interesting character was none other than Dr.G, Council Member and well-known community advocate, wearing his “Friendly Beast” costume.

For several years, Dr. G has donned custom-made costumes on holidays and while doing so, has devoted quality time in and amongst the residents. This time Dr G played the part of the “Friendly Beast” complete with mask, paws, feet, and a tailor made suit. Last Halloween he was a pirate, at Thanksgiving he donned a man-sized turkey costume, and at Christmas, Dr G performed Christmas carols on his trumpet, as the “Colton Elf,” of course, dressed in costume.

October 31 was a busy day for the Friendly Beast. The early morning hours were spent visiting City Hall, the Police Department, Development offices, Community Services and the Utilities Department. He also met up with the Colton State Pre-school group of children who themselves were also touring in costume at the Downtown Fire Station. “The timing was perfect,” said Chris Rymer, Childcare Manager who also donned a costume.

In addition, several local businesses, including Stater Bros., Flantastic, Colton Beauty Salon, Inland Valley Insurance, and Karla’s Flowers requested that the Friendly Beast make an appearance. Yvette Salas, Manager at Stater Bros. offered,  “I think the costumes are a great way to interact with the community.” In addition, Karla Ramirez, owner of Karla’s Flowers, commented, “Dr.G always stops by to support the local businesses,” and continued, “Everyone on my staff wanted to take a picture.”

For the dozens of people who stopped by Sombrero Marker or Stater’s corner, a picture with Dr.G was taken and was quickly posted on his Facebook page @ “DrG-“.  Many people stopped by to participate and hundreds offered a wave and a honk as they drove by. This tradition has continued to grow to the delight of Colton residents, both for young children, as well as adults.

For those who know Dr. G, which are many in the community, knows that he maintains close contact with the residents. He is available, is always willing to help as much as possible, and willing to “roll up his sleeves.” These costume appearances are just another way Dr G reaches out to the community. Children love it, and parents enjoy a “Colton Smile.” Congratulations to Dr G on this successful community outreach. May he be blessed with many more active years to come, and may his service to the community continue to be a blessing to all those with whom he comes into contact.
