SBVC Hires new Head Coach

SAN BERNARDINO>> San Bernardino Valley College has hired Daniel Algattas as head coach of the Wolverines’ football team. His hiring was confirmed Thursday night by the San Bernardino Community College District Board.

Algattas comes to Valley after spending the past two seasons as the offensive coordinator at Ventura College, and the previous six seasons coaching quarterbacks and offense at Mt. San Antonio College. Algattas replaces Jason Vandiver, who was not retained after one season at the helm of the Wolverines.

“We went through an exhaustive search to find Daniel, and I believe we have made the right choice,” said SBVC Director of Athletics David Rubio. “Daniel is going to be great not only for the program, but for the school and the community. We expect he will be able to build our program into one of the best in the state.”

“I look forward to the challenge presented to me here,” Algattas said. “My hope is that we are able to lay down a new foundation for success here at San Bernardino Valley College.”

Algattas graduated from Walnut High School, and attended Mt. SAC before transferring to UCLA, where he was a back-up quarterback for the Bruins. After graduating with a degree in political science and business economics, he became a coach at Mt. SAC, while also holding down the head coaching job at Baldwin Park High School, taking a team that had gone winless to a CIF playoff berth in one season.

He left Mt. SAC for the offensive coordinator job at Ventura, where he oversaw an offense that set school records for scoring, first downs and total offense in his first season. Last season, Ventura was second in the state in points per game average, scoring 475 points in 11 games.

He will take over a San Bernardino team that was in the bottom 10 in the state in overall scoring, as the Wolverines only scored 173 points in 10 games. San Bernardino will return the state’s top defense, however, as the Wolverines only allowed 203 points, and a state-lowest 214.1 yards per game.
