The Frugal Frigate in downtown Redlands hosted a book signing for the recently released ABC book, “R is for Redlands.” Authors and illustrators Anneli Pendley and Jennifer and Kevin Bryant were in attendance to sign copies and explain what the book is all about. “The book is an ABC book meant for children and adults,” said Jennifer Bryant. “It’s got a Redlands icon, place, or event for each letter of the alphabet.” For example, an excerpt from the book reads, “O is for orange groves growing all about town. Their sweet spring perfume wafts for miles around.” Each icon, place or event is accompanied with a vibrant illustration and brief description explaining the subject matter of the page. According to Bryant, a few letters, like W and I, were more challenging to relate to the city of Redlands. Furthermore, Bryant explained that portions of the book sales are donated to the publisher, the Redlands Conservancy. The Redlands Conservancy is an organization that dedicates itself to preserving the historical environment of Redlands. According to Bryant only five hundred copies of R is for Redlands were to be printed. However, due to large numbers of pre-orders, the Conservancy agreed to fund another five hundred copies. “We’ve been humbled with the response that this has gotten,” said Bryant. The creative team behind “R is for Redlands” is working on a spinoff to their recent publication, they shared. A children’s coloring book is in the works and will contain all the illustrations featured in “R is for Redlands.” “I think our artwork has a certain amount of recognition at this point,” said Pendley. “I think it might be fun for the kids to try and replicate it on a coloring book page.” Pendley explained that they are hoping to have the coloring book completed for the Redlands Extravaganza on Nov. 2.
