Teachers use Vacation Time to Improve their Skills

Moreno Valley Unified School District (MVUSD) just got back from their two-week spring break. So what did teachers do? Many were back in the classroom, as students this time, taking advantage of a week of professional-development opportunities offered by the district. “We’ve found that when we offer professional development during vacation periods, we get a very strong response from teachers,” said Dr. Sue Buster, MVUSD Director of Professional Development. “They could be enjoying some time off – they’ve certainly earned it. But they are just so dedicated to their craft and want to be able to give students their very best, they’re here, working and learning with their colleagues.” Buster said that many of the teachers want to avoid being away from their classrooms to attend professional development when school is in session. She said close to 700 of the district’s approximately 1,500 certificated employees were enrolled in one or more professional-development classes offered over the vacation. “Teachers don’t have to be doing this during spring break,” said Assistant Superintendent Dr. Martinrex Kedziora. “But they choose to because they’re committed to their profession and to their students.”
