Community Comes Together at the Country Fair

GRAND TERRACE >> On Saturday, Nov. 5, the City of Grand Terrace hosted its 35th Annual Country Fair to bring residents together for community-filled fun at the Grand Terrace City Hall Civic Center. Vendors who live or work in Grand Terrace were a part of the fair and sold hand-made items and home-grown plants. Kayla Dunlop, resident of Grand Terrace, said it was her third time selling hand-made jewelry at the fair for a business she started called PHantastic Jewelry. All proceeds go to the PHA Pulmonary Hypertension Association, an association that works to bring awareness to Pulmonary Hypertension, a incurable disease Dunlop has. A baking contest and chili cook-off were also a part of the fair festivities. Grand Terrace Mayor Darcy introduced the judges of the contests and the winners. The judges who were chosen to taste test the delicious treats included Jane Haines, Senior Center President; Penny Radtke, Grand Terrace Woman's Club President; Jim McNaboe, Lions Club President; Casey Carlson, Grand Terrace Chamber of Commerce and Oscar Perez from the Rec Center. Virginia Fernandez and Bob Youhas tied for first place in the chili contest and Trudi Loder took second place. Nicole Irey won first place for the cake contest and Tyler Loder won second place. Joyce Lester won first place for the pie contest and Dawn Marie Irey won second place. For the cookie contest, Kathy Gors won first place and Lola Hornbeck took second place. Julian Monteon won first place for the salsa contest. Fairgoers also had the opportunity to buy used books from the “Friends of the Library” sale, with proceeds going toward buying new books and DVDs for check-out in the library. Some of the other items that were up for sale included handmade quilts, woodworkings and leather items, home décor, hand-made buttons and other jewelry. McNaboe also welcomed the Historical and Cultural Activities Committee, the sponsors of the event including Chairperson Pauline Grant, Treasurer Masako Gifford, Secretary Martha Monteon, Martina Boentaran, Rochelle Rosenkild, Susan Robles, Frances Carter and Ann Petta. Various community organizations were also present including the Citizens’ Patrol, the local 4-H club, Chamber of Commerce and the Grand Terrace Woman's Club. The Grand Terrace Woman's Club featured a family raffle with board games. Members of the club also spoke of an upcoming event the community can be a part of. Every year, the club has displayed a fully-decorated Christmas tree at the Innovations In Hair & Nails Salon in Grand Terrace in which the raffle off. There will also be many presents under the tree and the community can purchase raffle tickets for $1 to be entered in the drawing. Tickets will be sold at the hair salon or by any Grand Terrace Woman's Club member. If residents missed out on the fun this year, they can look forward to the next country fair in November 2017.
