Last Thursday, Nov. 13, the San Bernardino Community College District Board of Trustees unanimously approved the appointment of Gloria Fisher, JD, as the 14th President of San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC). Dr. Fisher, now in her 23rd year with SBVC, has been serving as interim president since July 2013. Her appointment as President of SBVC is effective Nov. 14. Fisher started her career at SBVC in 1991 as a tenure-track faculty member in the Administration of Justice program. She became department chair in 1994 and Dean of the Criminal Justice Division in 2001. A run of 12 previous permanent presidents of the college dating back to its founding in 1926 ended with Dr. Debra Daniels, who left the college after four and a half years in March 2012 to assume the presidency at Joliet Junior College in Illinois. Since then, there had been two interim presidents prior to Dr. Fisher. During that period of transition, Fisher was tapped to serve as Interim Vice President of Student Services in 2012. Bruce Baron, District Chancellor, notes, “I have great confidence in Dr. Fisher and I look forward to working with her as we bring SBVC to greatness. In her time as Interim President, Dr. Fisher has restored a strong collegial consultation process that is vital to the successful internal operations of the campus as all voices need to be heard as difficult decisions are made. She has reconnected the campus with the community through partnerships that will benefit our students and events that serve to make SBVC a cultural center.” “I am both honored and humbled to have been chosen to serve as president of this college,” says Fisher. “San Bernardino Valley College has been my home for my entire academic career and I have gotten to know and love this college, its people and the community it serves. I look at this college and I see it as the jewel of the San Bernardino Valley. Our faculty and staff are second to none and I want to do whatever I can to help them continue to make our students’ academic and career dreams become real.” San Bernardino Valley College is one campus in a two-college community college district, which also includes Crafton Hills College in Yucaipa. The district offices and campus are located on South Del Rosa in San Bernardino, across from the former Norton Air Force base.
