If you've noticed the blooming white roses as you drive into Grand Terrace, you're witnessing a part of the city's new beautification initiative. This landscaping project aims to create a cohesive and charming aesthetic throughout the community, enhancing its visual appeal and reinforcing a unique city identity.

We spoke with a city official who shared details about the initiative. "For years, the entryways off Barton Road have had white roses at the base of the signs, and they look really pretty," he explained. "There are also white roses along the south side of Barton as you come into town."

The idea to expand the white rose theme throughout the city was inspired by a previous project. "When we did the Christmas tree a couple of years ago, we took out the fake tree and put in a live one with white roses around the bottom. Now, we’ve done some landscaping at Barton and Preston, continuing that white rose theme."

The goal is to create a consistent and attractive landscape design across Grand Terrace. "We’ve ended up with a mishmash of different plantings over the years, and what we’d like to do is have something consistent throughout the city. We're incorporating white roses along with purple bushes and Birds of Paradise. Over time, as these plants mature and fill in, it will create a very pretty and cohesive look," the official said.

This landscaping effort is not just about aesthetics; it also ties into Grand Terrace's cultural symbols. "The city is known for the Honey Hills and the bees," the official noted. "As new commercial projects come in, they are required to include art as part of their development. We're asking that this artwork incorporate beehives, honeycombs, or bees to continue that theme. Hopefully, in 10, 15, or 20 years, we'll see a consistent theme of white roses and honey bees throughout Grand Terrace, giving us a unique sense of place."

The symbolism behind the white roses adds another layer of meaning to the project. "White roses are supposed to represent purity, which is a nice sentiment for our city," the official mentioned.

From a practical standpoint, white roses are an excellent choice for city landscaping. "Roses are very drought-tolerant and low-maintenance. They don’t shed a lot of leaves, and once they reach the desired shape, they only need trimming once a year. They’re hardy and can withstand various weather conditions, making them a practical pick for our climate," the official explained.

The new landscaping initiative not only beautifies Grand Terrace but also fosters a sense of community pride and identity. As the white roses and honey bee-themed artworks become more prominent, residents and visitors alike will enjoy a charming and unified aesthetic that sets Grand Terrace apart.
