Engine Maintenance: Keeping Your Car Running Strong

The engine is the heart of your vehicle, and like any heart, it needs regular care to stay healthy. For Inland Empire drivers who depend on their cars for long commutes, weekend trips to the mountains, and everyday errands, proper engine maintenance is the key to reliability, performance, and longevity.

The most important step in engine care is regular oil changes. Oil lubricates moving parts, reduces friction, and helps regulate temperature. Over time, however, oil breaks down and collects contaminants, which can cause wear. In hot Inland summers, engines run hotter, making timely oil changes even more critical. Following your manufacturer’s recommended schedule and using the right oil type protects your engine from unnecessary strain.

Another essential component is the air filter. This filter prevents dirt, dust, and debris from entering the engine. In the Inland Empire, where winds often carry dust from nearby deserts, clogged filters are common. A dirty air filter reduces airflow, which decreases fuel efficiency and power. Replacing it every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, or sooner if you drive in dusty areas, keeps the engine breathing freely.

Spark plugs are another small but vital part of engine performance. Worn plugs can cause misfires, rough idling, or difficulty starting. Replacing spark plugs at the recommended interval ensures smooth combustion and optimal fuel economy.

Cooling also plays a role in engine health. Checking coolant levels regularly and flushing the system according to schedule prevents overheating, a frequent risk during Inland Empire heatwaves or mountain climbs. An overheated engine can lead to severe damage, including cracked cylinder heads.

Listening to your engine provides clues, too. Knocking, ticking, or grinding noises can indicate problems ranging from low oil pressure to worn components. Addressing issues early often prevents more costly repairs. Many local auto shops in Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ontario offer engine diagnostics to pinpoint problems before they escalate.

Fuel quality should not be overlooked. Using Top Tier–certified gasoline available at many Inland Empire stations ensures your engine receives the detergents it needs to prevent carbon buildup in fuel injectors and valves.

Finally, keep an eye on the check engine light. While it may be tempting to ignore, this warning often signals issues that, if caught early, are easier and cheaper to fix.

For Inland Empire residents, engine maintenance is about more than avoiding breakdowns, it’s about confidence. By staying proactive with routine care, drivers can ensure their engines run strong for every commute, road trip, and family outing across Southern California.
