California Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) in cooperation with California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) is planning to conduct prescribed burns at Lake Perris State Recreation Area over the course of several days May 31- June 14, 2017. The actual burn date(s) will be dictated by weather conditions. The vegetation type will be annual grassland. The burn will total close to 600 acres. Smoke will be visible from nearby communities but will disperse quickly and is not expected to be a health hazard.

This exercise will not impact visitor use of Lake Perris State Recreation Area except in the immediate area of the burning operation; the Park, lake and campgrounds will remain open.

This project is aimed at restoring native grass habitats as well as reducing the hazard posed by flammable vegetation. In addition to the ecological and hazard reduction benefits, this prescribe burn will provide firefighters with valuable wildland fire training.

Firefighting resources from DPR and Cal Fire will be assigned to the operation on burn days.

The briefings for personnel involved in this project will commence at 6:30 am followed by firing operations around 8:00 to 9:00 am weather permitting.
