The San Bernardino Valley College Black Students Union, Tumaini, and the SBVC Office of Student Life are pleased to announce a special advance screening of the award-winning film, The Retrieval, on Thursday, May 1st, the day before the film opens in theaters. This screening is free and open to the public. The film has won over a dozen film festival awards, including the Special Jury Prize for Acting at SXSW (South by Southwest) and the International Critics Prize at the Festival de Cinéma Américain de Deauville. The story takes place in 1864, a time when slavery was about to be outlawed, but the slave trade was still alive. (The Senate passed the 13th Amendment on April 8, 1864; but the House did not pass it until January 31, 1865.) It’s a coming-of-age story about a black youngster working with a white slave bounty hunter gang to contact new freedmen and persuade them to return to the South so they can be put back in chains. But unexpected events happen and the youngster and the freed slave he’s after end up apparently on the run together. The film is 93 minutes long and will be followed by a half-hour question-and-answer session. The screening will take place on the San Bernardino Valley College campus in the business conference center, room B-100, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

A residence shows visible damage from flooding, mud and debris following severe winter storms that began Dec. 23, which brought heavy rain and debris flows to mountain and high desert communities across San Bernardino County. This week, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors approved recovery-related fee waivers to help eligible property owners repair and rebuild as response and long-term recovery efforts continue.
