SAN BERNARDINO>> The Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley is hosting its annual Critter Camp, a week-long, interactive, learning experience for students entering the third, fourth and fifth grades. The camp began July 18 and ends July 22. Through the hands-on camp, children have the opportunity to learn the importance of kindness and compassion toward all living creatures. During Critter Camp, the campers experience the wonderful world of bugs, marsupials, therapy and service animals, the difference between wild and tame animals, and “make & take” animal art activities all while hanging out in actual tents. Some of the guest presenters include representatives from: San Bernardino County Museum, San Bernardino City Police Department Canine Unit, Wonders of Wildlife, Hooves and Paws Therapy and Service Animals, Inland Empire Pet Partners, Lucky Bunny Rabbit Rescue/San Diego House Rabbit Society, Kathy Roman with her parrot and goats, a giraffe art activity with Pearle Ludwig and music with the Voci Soli Choir from San Bernardino Valley College. The students will also be making Stars of HOPE to send to the Dallas, Texas community and therapy animal organizations. Participating in this project gives students the opportunity to experience the value of helping people heal from a disaster by offering them hope, and learning about their own importance by making a constructive difference. In addition, throughout the week the students work with Generation Now to create a “Pollinating Kindness” mural. All activities and lessons reinforce the importance of empathy and compassion to people, safety around and kindness to animals, as well as being responsible stewards of our environment. Each day, students receive snacks, as well as reinforcement materials and take home crafts. For more information about Critter Camp and other HSSBV events, visit www.hssbv.org, call 909-380-7844 or stop by the office at 374 West Orange Show Road, San Bernardino.
