Blaine Wildfire Scares Residents in Moreno Valley

Around 4:00 p.m. Sunday, a quick moving wildfire erupted near UC Riverside close to the 300 block of Blaine Street and soon began to creep up Box Springs Mountain moving toward Moreno Valley.  In a very short period of time, the blaze grew from approximately 250 acres to over 800 acres, that was fed by heavy brush throughout the area.  “The local residents that lived west of Hidden Springs Drive from Greenridge Drive to Country Gate Road in Moreno Valley were told to evacuate,”said the local authorities who were present at the scene.  Canyon Springs High School was being used as an evacuation center on Cougar Canyon Road, the evacuation order was lifted at 9 p.m that evening.  The fire was 30% contained by Monday morning, which had not increased since about 7 p.m. Sunday.  Only one house suffered minor damage to the attic from the embers going into the exterior vents on the roof, and the firefighters were able to contain the minor fire created by the embers before it caused any extensive damage to the home.  Currently, the fire is still under investigation to determine where it originated and how it got started.  The fire had charred approximately 1,044 acres as of Monday morning, but the cool temperatures and a foggy layer of mist helped to limit the amount of fire expansion in the early morning hours.  About 404 firefighters, 35 engines and several water-dropping helicopters battled the blaze both on Sunday evening and all day Monday.  The planes and helicopters were dropping a fire retardant Phos-Chek to get an immediate control of the growing flames in the evening. Residents whose homes were doused in the retardant may call the Fire Department at 951-436-4142 to help in cleaning of the houses.
