COLTON>> The City of Colton is now offering a recreational competitive league, meant specifically for children ages 13-17. If interested, sign up early since space is limited. All registrants must be between the ages of 13-17. Studies done by the Aspen Institute have shown that playing sports over the summer encourages children to set goals, practice self-discipline, and social engagement. The study also showed that physical activity can help improve academics, attitudes, and behavior, and can even help improve concentration. The deadline to register for the recreational league is Monday, May 1. The registration fee, which includes team jersey, referees, and team awards for first place, is $53 for residents and $67 for non-residents. Late registration entries will be accepted based on the needs of the team. Positions will be first come, first serve. An additional $5 late registration fee will apply. Late registrants will only be accepted until Sunday, May 7. Players will be evaluated on Saturday, May 6, between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. All participants are encouraged to attend. A coaches meeting will take place on Saturday, May 13. All volunteer coaches are required to attend. Those unable to attend will be ineligible for head coach. Practice will begin the week of May 22. The regular season will run from Saturday, June 10, through Saturday, July 29. Playoff games will begin Saturday, August 5. As per the City of Colton website, youth sports help provide a safe environment, while emphasizing fun, participation and cooperation.
