Colton Pony Baseball's ex-league president has been released on bail after being arrested last week on charges of embezzlement and grand theft from the league. Matthew Hernandez, 40, was arrested on the afternoon of Nov. 25, following an investigation by Colton police. Hernandez came with police to the station to speak with detectives regarding unaccounted-for deductions from the league's general fund account, which he headed as president for less than six months. In May, Hernandez was recalled from his position as league president along with two other league board members, on accusations of stealing funds from the league. "We've been investigating this since it was brought to our attention after Colton Pony did an internal audit and found discrepancies," said Colton Police Detective Ray Mendez, last Monday. "It is still an ongoing investigation." Police are not disclosing the amount of money Hernandez is alleged to have stolen but grand theft can be charged when over $900 has been taken. Hernandez was booked last week at West Valley Detention Center on charges of embezzlement and grand theft. On Monday he told Colton City News by phone that he was "not able to" comment on the situation.
