On Thursday, June 15, 2017 at 10:29 a.m., Deputy Casas initiated a traffic stop in the area of Michigan Ave./Mavis St. The driver, later identified as Tyrone Johnson, stopped and Casas made contact with him and two children, ages 4 years old and 6 months old. During the contact, Deputy Casas observed signs leading him to believe Johnson may be under the influence. Casas began a pat down search and during that time, Johnson kept moving around and putting his hands in his pockets. Johnson did not comply with commands, attempted to flee, and Casas struggled with Johnson to take him into custody. Casas deployed his Taser, but it was ineffective and Johnson fled on foot. Casas gave chase and deployed his Taser again. The second attempt was successful and Johnson fell to the ground. Johnson was detained without further incident.

Tyrone Johnson suffered injuries to his face, hands and wrists during the fall. He was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for treatment. Following medical treatment, Johnson will be booked at West Valley Detention Center for Possession of Narcotics for Sale and Child Endangerment.

During a search of Johnson, Deputy Casas located a large quantity of cocaine and OxyContin in his pockets and marijuana in his vehicle, in the immediate proximity of the children.
