San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) has designated this the Year of Literacy. The highlight of the year-long focus is SBCUSD Literacy Day 2020.

The first annual Literacy Day on Saturday, March 7, 2020, at San Gorgonio High School will feature student displays, community booths, reading and writing activities, free books for students in preschool to high school, and more.

The community can get involved in the Year of Literacy now by using #SBCUSDReads when posting on social media and checking out www.sbcusd.com/SBCUSDReads to stay up-to-date on all the literacy events.

Literacy skills serve as a foundation for all future learning, so a focus on improving literacy is a focus on helping students succeed in all academic areas. Literacy is vital to careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and even in learning a second language. Studies show that those who are literate in their native language have an easier time learning to read in a second language.

According to a 2019 report released by the National Center for Education Statistics, one in five U.S. adults has low literacy skills. That means that about 43 million adult Americans either can’t read at all or can’t properly comprehend what they read. Poor literacy skills can significantly impact a person’s ability to apply for and get hired for jobs at all levels.

Join SBCUSD in promoting the importance of literacy by attending SBCUSD Literacy Day 2020 at San Gorgonio High School, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
