GTHS Athlete of the Week

At just 17 years old, Michael "Mike" DeFalco Jr., a Junior at Grand Terrace High School, is already making a lasting impact. With an impressive 3.3 GPA, Mike exemplifies the balance of academics and athletics, proving that hard work and dedication pay off both in the classroom and on the field.

Mike’s athletic journey began early. At age five, he was already lacing up his cleats for Grand Terrace Community Soccer Club’s Mini Hulks, coached by a close family friend. Soon after, he discovered football, playing with Colton Youth through middle school before making the move to Grand Terrace High School. Now in his third year on the GTHS Varsity Football team, Mike plays as both a Linebacker and Running Back, bringing power and heart to every game.

Football wasn’t his only sport at GTHS, Mike wrestles at 175 lbs. during the Winter season and competes in Shotput and Discus for Track & Field in the Spring. His commitment to athletics is matched by his drive to continuously improve, often spending his free time at the gym lifting heavy and sharpening his skills.

One of Mike’s proudest accomplishments is being named Team Captain for the Titans for two consecutive years. He leads by example, both on the field and in the classroom, where he’s currently taking AP Language among other challenging courses. For Mike, being a “Student Athlete” isn’t just a title, it is a mindset. He takes Titan Pride in motivating his teammates, building strong bonds, and setting the bar high as they work to break through the second round of playoffs, a historic goal for GTHS Football Titans.

Mike’s strength comes from a deeply personal place. He lost his father on March 18, 2023, at the end of his Freshman year. That loss pushed him to mature quickly, but it also gave him a purpose. He had to learn to grow into a man by myself with the help of his Titan Family & Football Program. His father remains his greatest source of motivation, and every time he steps on the field, it is with the intention to honor his memory.

Looking ahead, Mike is considering joining the military after high school, with college and college football still very much on the table. He is leaving room for life to unfold as it should, trusting the path that God lays out for him, but he shares that he will definitely make a decision his Senior year.

When asked for a quote that captures his mindset, Mike chose: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” It’s a motto that perfectly fits his relentless pursuit of greatness and the passion he brings to every endeavor.

Mike is more than just an athlete, he is a leader, a role model, and a young man with a bright future. His continued support and appreciation for my photography hobby over the years have made it a true honor to watch him grow into an amazing Titan. The best is undoubtedly yet to come, and we look forward to cheering him on every step of the way as his journey unfolds.
