On Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at about 0651 hours, the San Bernardino Police Department received a call for service to assist the Fire Department at 2787 N. G St in the city of San Bernardino. The call was regarding a 9-year-old boy who had injured himself with a firework. Upon arrival, officers confirmed that the 9-year-old boy had sustained a severe injury to his left hand after he had detonated a suspected homemade M80 within the bathroom of his residence. The victim was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center for further treatment of his injuries. While on scene officers located a second device in the dining room of the residence. This device was taken as evidence and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad was contacted for assistance. Bomb Squad personnel responded and took possession of it for inspection and disposal. Upon inspection, they determined that the device was not a commercially made M80 firework, and categorized it as an Improvised Explosive Device.

San Bernardino Police Detectives served a search warrant at the residence, after a search of the location no other devices or illegal fireworks were located.
