The San Bernardino County Board of Education adopted a resolution to acknowledge January as California School Board Recognition Month at their recent meeting on Jan. 4.

During this time, California school board members are commended for serving the interests of students and shaping the educational landscape of their communities. According to the California School Boards Association, there are more than 5,000 school board trustees in California, serving at both the district and county office of education level.

School board trustees aid in supporting student success by establishing policy priorities and ensuring that educational programs and opportunities for learning meet state and local standards. In addition, the board adopts an annual budget, approves building plans and hears student expulsion, inter-district transfer and charter school appeals.

“Our school board trustees serve on the front lines of educational advocacy and are a critical link between our schools and communities. I salute them for their diligent contributions on behalf of students and families in San Bernardino County,” said County Superintendent Ted Alejandre.

The California School Boards Association sponsors the event to underscore the commitment to public service shown by governing members for local school districts, community colleges and county boards of education.
