At a small backyard COVID-19 compliant ceremony on Oct. 24, Nathan Felix, 16-year-old resident of Grand Terrace, was awarded Boy Scouts of America’s highest advancement award, the rank of Eagle Scout. Nathan is the son of Brian and Nicole Felix.

For the rank of Eagle, a Scout must earn 21 merit badges, serve in a leadership position for six months and complete an Eagle service project. The purpose of the Eagle project is to give the Scout the opportunity to plan, develop and give leadership to others while benefitting a school, any religious institution or the community. For Nathan’s service project, he raised over $1300 and led 14 people to refurbish a horse washing station at the San Bernardino County Sheriffs Rodeo grounds. The entire project took 145 hours to complete. Nathan has been a member of Troop 40 here in Grand Terrace for 5 ½ years. He started in Scouts as a Cub Scout with Pack 242 in Grand Terrace.

In 2019 Boy Scouts of America calculated that nationwide, Eagle Scouts and their volunteers completed 8,575,780 hours of service. According Independantsector.org the value of a volunteer hour amounts to $25.43 per hour which equals $218.1 million worth of services to communities. Eagle Scouts are still a rarity with less than 7% of all Scouts achieving the rank of Eagle. Troop 40 meets every Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.
