During the November 7 Inland Empire Economic Partnership (IEEP) Turning Red Tape into Red Carpet Awards Ceremony, the City of Moreno Valley was honored with a pair of awards.

Now in its 12th year, the Turning Red Tape into Red Carpet awards honors agencies that have developed innovative ways to avoid bureaucratic red tape for the betterment of local economies and communities. This year, the City of Moreno Valley received awards in the categories of 'Best Public Safety Initiative' and 'Best Arts Innovation Initiative.'

“Innovation is a key component of the Moreno Valley identity," says Mayor Ulises Cabrera. "Receiving these awards is truly a testament to our ongoing focus and dedication to promoting public safety and the arts, and I’m proud to see the hard work and talent of our City staff recognized by the IEEP.”

The City received the Public Safety Initiative Award for its Smoke Alarms and Fire Education Resources program, better known by the acronym, "S.A.F.E.R." Made possible through partnerships with local businesses, this program offers residents a free smoke and carbon monoxide alarm by simply showing proof of residence. S.A.F.E.R. also includes an aggressive education campaign and a dedicated website to promote fire safety and fire escape plans and highlights the importance of working smoke alarms. Since its inception, more than 700 smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors have been claimed by residents, and the City has seen a 47% reduction in single-family home fires.

The City also received the Arts Innovation Initiative Award for the City of Moreno Valley Public Art Program. Providing local artists of all mediums with opportunities to showcase their talent, the Public Arts Program celebrates diversity and strengthens civic pride. Since the program’s inception, five murals and four utility box art pieces have been installed throughout the city, each beautifying the area and fostering a sense of ownership among residents. The program has encouraged an increase in property values at locations where murals have been installed. The program’s success has also inspired residents and businesses to engage in future art projects and City-wide events such as the annual Multicultural and Art Festival.
