Siblings, Pooja Datir, age 14, and Rohit Datir, age 12, recently earned multiple Associate of Arts degrees in the Arts and Humanities and in Math, Sciences, and Computer Science from West Los Angeles Community College.

Upon hearing of the Datirs’ accomplishments, the Mayor of the City of Moreno Valley, Dr. Yxstian Alberto Gutierrez, awarded Pooja and Rohit with certificates recognizing their achievements. Rohit Datir said, “The Mayor said even he was [enrolled] in college courses while he was in high school and he knows how hard it is to pursue college courses while in high school.” Mayor Gutierrez stated that he would have loved to award the Datir siblings in front of council members if we were not in the midst of a pandemic.

“When our grandma passed away with cancer, my brother, sister, and I decided to become doctors,” said the Datirs. Pooja says “there are thousands of people in the community who need medical support. I want to devote my life to supporting them as a doctor.” Rohit looks up to his older brother who is currently in a Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine degree program. Rohit says he hopes to devote his life to supporting the community as a surgeon. “Pooja and Rohit are an outstanding sibling duo that never fails to impress me. Their ambitious goals, admirable character, and diligent work ethic are just a few things that demonstrate their well-rounded success,” says the Datirs’ teacher, Rachel Weisenbach.

Both siblings are petitioning to earn a total of four AA degrees on their transcripts by August 2021 when they will be eligible to earn additional AAs in Health Science and Health Profession. The Datirs attend Sage Oak Charter Schools where personalized learning plans for students are a top priority. Rahul and Priti Datir, the siblings’ parents, send a special thank you to the Sage Oak staff for their outstanding support and flexibility that allowed their children the ability to focus on both college courses and high school curriculum simultaneously.

Sage Oak Charter Schools is a non-classroom based charter school that serves students in grades K-12th in the counties of San Bernardino, Riverside, San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange, Imperial, Ventura, Kern, and Inyo.
