The Board of Supervisors and Regional Parks are excited to begin work on the first extension of the Santa Ana River Trail (SART) Phase IV-A project, creating 3.9 miles of paved roadway between California Street and Orange Street in Redlands.

This section of the trail will offer safe travel for walkers and cyclists from Redlands through Riverside County to Huntington Beach, where the trail ends.

When Phase IV: Sections A, B and C are completed, the trail will span 110 miles.

The Board of Supervisors secured funding to cover the entire cost of Phase IV-A when they approved a $6.8 million grant agreement with the California State Coastal Conservancy to fund the planning, design and construction of the project.

“This is great news for the people of Redlands and everyone looking forward to a mountains-to-the-sea walking and cycling trail,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman and Third District Supervisor Dawn Rowe. “Signing this grant agreement supports the development of a balanced and sustainable county for our communities, and signals progress in providing a safe means of travel and recreation that promotes health and well-being.”

Regional Parks Director Beahta Davis said, “This aligns with the commitment the Board of Supervisors made when they adopted the Countywide Vision, promoting a healthy and active community.”

The county has completed and opened two sections of the Santa Ana River Trail to the public:

  • SART- Phase I was completed in April 2007, extending the trail from La Cadena Avenue in Colton to the Riverside-San Bernardino County line, where it joined Riverside County’s existing trail section.
  • SART- Phase II was completed in April 2005, extending the trail from La Cadena Avenue in Colton to Waterman Avenue in San Bernardino.

SART- Phase III is located between Waterman Avenue in San Bernardino and California Street in Redlands. Construction began in September of 2023 and is projected to be completed in December of 2024.
