Redlands Police Step Up Summer Traffic Safety Enforcement Ahead of Independence Day Travel

As Independence Day approaches and thousands of Southern California residents prepare for vacations, family gatherings, and holiday celebrations, law enforcement agencies across the region are increasing traffic enforcement efforts to help keep roadways safe. In Redlands, motorists can expect to see additional patrols during one of the busiest travel periods of the year as officers focus on reducing preventable collisions through education and enforcement.

The heightened enforcement is part of seasonal traffic safety efforts that occur throughout California during periods of increased travel. Summer traditionally brings heavier traffic volumes as schools are out of session, families take road trips, and community events draw visitors to local destinations. While these seasonal activities create opportunities for recreation and celebration, they also increase the potential for crashes caused by speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, and failure to wear seat belts.

The Redlands Police Department has consistently emphasized that traffic enforcement is intended to improve public safety rather than simply issue citations. Officers routinely focus on behaviors that statistics have shown contribute most significantly to serious injuries and fatal collisions. These include excessive speed, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, distracted driving involving handheld electronic devices, failure to obey traffic signals, and seat belt violations.

Seat belt use remains one of the simplest and most effective ways motorists can protect themselves in the event of a collision. According to traffic safety experts, properly worn seat belts significantly reduce the risk of serious injury and death during crashes. California law requires drivers and passengers to wear seat belts, and children must be secured in age-appropriate child safety seats or booster seats. During holiday enforcement campaigns, officers frequently pay particular attention to occupant restraint compliance because it remains one of the easiest safety measures drivers can control before beginning any trip.

Distracted driving continues to present another significant challenge on local roadways. Although smartphones provide navigation, communication, and entertainment, even a brief glance away from the road can dramatically increase crash risk. California law prohibits drivers from holding or operating handheld electronic devices while driving except under limited circumstances. Officials encourage motorists to set navigation before leaving, silence unnecessary notifications, and keep their full attention on surrounding traffic.

Impaired driving also remains a major focus during holiday weekends. Law enforcement agencies throughout the Inland Empire routinely remind residents that alcohol, cannabis, certain prescription medications, and illegal drugs can all impair judgment, reaction time, and decision-making abilities. Officials encourage anyone planning to consume alcohol to arrange for a designated driver, rideshare service, taxi, or public transportation before attending celebrations.

Historically, holiday weekends have produced higher traffic volumes throughout San Bernardino County, particularly along major corridors connecting mountain communities, desert destinations, and coastal attractions. Redlands serves as an important gateway for travelers heading toward the San Bernardino Mountains and eastern portions of the county, making traffic safety especially important during peak travel periods.

The community benefits of traffic safety extend far beyond preventing citations. Every avoided collision reduces the burden on emergency responders, hospitals, insurance systems, and families whose lives can be permanently altered by preventable crashes. Safe driving also supports local businesses by ensuring residents and visitors can travel confidently throughout the city while enjoying community events and holiday celebrations.

As another Independence Day weekend approaches, Redlands once again demonstrates that community safety depends upon a partnership between law enforcement and the public. While officers will continue monitoring roadways for dangerous driving behaviors, every resident has the opportunity to contribute by making responsible choices each time they get behind the wheel.

The safest holiday memories are created not by arriving first, but by ensuring everyone arrives home safely. By combining responsible driving with thoughtful enforcement, Redlands continues working toward a future where every journey ends exactly where it should: home with family and friends.
