Supervisor Gutierrez's Weekly Message: Join the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) Program

Dear District 5 Residents,

As an educator and County Supervisor, I understand the importance of higher education and providing our youth with the resources needed to excel. For this reason, I support the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) program. The YAC program is a valuable initiative that provides Riverside County high school students with opportunities to develop their leadership skills and engage in community service. The Youth Commission is an advisory board under the Board of Supervisors that aims to improve the quality of life for all Riverside County Youth.

Through the YAC program, high school students in Riverside County engage in various community service activities throughout the school year. These activities include partnering with local nonprofits, participating in community clean-ups, organizing food and clothing drives, and leading other community-based initiatives such as supporting low-income families and advocating for mental health and sustainable practices. The program allows students to give back to their communities, develop a sense of civic responsibility, and better understand the challenges that face their communities.

One of the key benefits of the YAC program is that it provides students with a platform to develop their leadership skills, learn professionalism and teamwork, and understand local politics. For example, the Youth Commission (YC) enables students to gain valuable experience leading and facilitating meetings, organizing events, and collaborating with other students to achieve common goals.

The Youth Commission consists of all five District Youth Advisory Councils. The five Commissioners from each YAC make up the Youth Commission Board. The board elects a Chair, Co-Chair, and Secretary to help lead the YC. Bi-Monthly YC Meetings are held to discuss upcoming projects and events and to provide recommendations to the Board of Supervisors for Youth Related issues.

The Fifth District Youth Advisory Council is currently accepting applicants from high school students living in Banning, Beaumont, Calimesa, Moreno Valley, Hemet, and San Jacinto. If you know of a student who is interested in joining us, please have them fill out our interest form (https://forms.gle/VXmhzn9CtFTkBz4aA), and our Youth Advisory Council Coordinator, Valeria Enciso will reach out to them promptly.

Thank you once again for your continued support.
