Nannette and Her Hotsy Totsy Boys Jazz Up GT Senior Center

The Grand Terrace Senior Center was a portal to all the glitz and glamour of the 1920s Jazz Age on Friday, Sept. 13, when Nannette and Her Hotsy Totsy boys took over during the monthly Friday morning performance. The senior center was packed with an audience whose members were ready to dance, swoon and laugh at the cabaret-style show. “She worked the audience,” said Arlene Weaver, who was present for the show. Various audience members were pulled up to participate in the show themselves at various points in the performance, Grand Terrace Senior Center Sunshine Chairman Don Bartee said. The group was in high demand, and both Bartee and Weaver acknowledged the Senior Center President JoAnn Johnson’s hard work in securing the group for the Friday morning performance. “Several people also donated money to bring the group in,” Bartee said. “The audience really enjoyed the performance.” Senior Center President JoAnn Johnson said that about 100 people attended the performance, which is nearly double the usual number, she said. When she was made aware of the group by chance—Johnson shared that she received mail from a community organization which mentioned the band’s website—she looked them up on the Internet. Despite the group’s performance charge, which was higher than what the senior center usually pays for its performances, Johnson said, “I started pursuing it.” The group is well-known throughout Southern California, with a résumé of more than 100 public performances. They have performed in the cities of Riverside, San Diego and Los Angeles, to name a few, and have performed at various jazz festivals throughout the Southern California area. Johnson said of the group, “They are incredibly talented and a lot of fun. It was an incredibly good morning.”
