SAN BERNARDINO >> Vipin Gupta, the associate dean of Cal State San Bernardino’s College of Business and Public Administration, has been named by the government of India to an inaugural initiative to connect international scholars, industrialists and entrepreneurs with universities in India to help improve the country’s quality of life. Gupta has been awarded the inaugural “Global Initiative of Academic Networks” (GIAN) professor by the government of India’s Ministry of Human Resource Development. The objective of GIAN is to tap into the talent pool of scientists and entrepreneurs from around the world to encourage them to engage with colleges and universities in India. The goal is to enhance the country’s existing academic resources, accelerate the pace of quality reform, and elevate India’s scientific and technological capacity to global excellence. “The goal is to have these international experts share their experiences and expertise to motivate people in India to work on Indian problems,” said Gupta, who is one of 297 professors from around the world and one of three California State University system professors to receive the award. “This is a great honor,” said Gupta, who joined Cal State San Bernardino in 2010 and teaches about business in China, India, the Middle East and Europe. “There were so many people nominated and only a few were selected, and this is so important to the people of India.” Gupta credited two reasons for his being named to the GIAN program. He has done community engagement work with CSUSB’s College of Business and Public Administration, and has played a role in developing the cultural competencies of students from the Center for Global Management through international business education and study abroad programs. That work has helped local businesses succeed in international markets. “This is a wonderful recognition of Vipin’s tremendous work, talent and accomplishments from throughout his career and here at Cal State San Bernardino,” said Lawrence Rose, dean of the university’s College of Business and Public Administration. “Like us, the Ministry of Human Resource Development knows that Vipin will be up for the challenge of successfully implementing this initiative.” Gupta, who has a Ph.D. in applied economics and management from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, is an expert in international management and strategy in a global context. He is renowned for his contributions to the science of culture, sustainable strategic management in the emerging markets, managing organizational and technological transformations, and entrepreneurial, global and women’s leadership. He is one of the 2015-2016 fellows for the American Council on Education. He is being mentored this year by President Michael Crow at Arizona State University and Secretary General Lesley Wilson at European University Association on innovative and technology-supported leadership of higher education to advance diversity and inclusion, along with academic excellence, student access and success, and knowledge-informed solutions to the major challenges facing our communities. Gupta has written and or edited 17 books, including the seminal GLOBE project on culture and leadership in 62 societies, 11 on family business models, two on organizational performance, one on the multinational subsidiaries in China, an innovative strategy textbook, and a recent textbook on global leadership. He is also the author of about 150 articles in international academic journals and book chapters. Gupta has been a consultant to many business schools and universities in India regarding their international initiatives and use of business simulations in teaching. He also served as a program reviewer for international business and management programs for the Center for Higher and Technical Education (CETYS University) in the state of Baja California, Mexico. On editorial boards of more than a dozen international journals, Gupta also has been on the advisory board of several business schools in India. He has been on the board of several international conferences, and has been an invited speaker and keynote speaker at more than 40 nations around the world.
