California League Teams Compete to Raise Funds for Special Olympics of Southern California

Two local California League teams, the Inland Empire 66ers and the Lake Elsinore Storm, are competing off the field as well, helping to raise funds for the Special Olympics of Southern California and their Polar Plunge fundraiser on March 8 in Big Bear. The Southern Division rivals will reach out to their fan base in a friendly competition to help each organization generate money and awareness for the Special Olympics. Additionally, both teams will be participating in the Polar Plunge, where anyone who raises $50 for the Special Olympics is also invited to run, jump or dive into chilly Big Bear Lake as part of this event. "The 66ers have had a great relationship with the Special Olympics for many years," stated General Manager Joe Hudson. "We look forward to having this friendly competition with the Storm while at the same time generating awareness for a great cause and once again, with the help of our fans, continue to support a great organization." The “Plunge” event helps the Special Olympics reach out and provide year-round training and sports programs for children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities in the Inland Empire region. The Special Olympics Southern California is host to 13,000 athletes in 11 counties. “The opportunity to continue our work and partnership with the Special Olympics is rewarding and exciting,” said Storm Director of Community Relations Courtney Kessler. “We hope fans and friends will join Thunder and the Storm organization for a special day.” Bragging rights will be on the line as the team with the most money raised will be awarded a trophy from the front office staff of the losing team during a game on the field.
