SAN BERNARDINO >> Crafton Hills College (CHC) awarded over $120,000 in scholarships to continuing and graduating students on Friday, May 20. More than 100 students received scholarships, including 25 STEM students who will receive $1,000 scholarships as part of a Southern California Edison grant to CHC. Students must apply for most of the scholarships, which are privately funded through the CHC Foundation, and are awarded on merit. Other scholars are selected by faculty and staff for their exemplary studies and service to the college. The highest honor is the President’s Award, whereby the student is nominated by faculty or staff and selected by the President. The President’s Award was given to Benjamin “Wes” Stevens, a mining engineering major who plans to transfer to the University of Nevada, Reno. He served as the president of the Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor Society, secretary of the Geology Club, and as a strong student voice on the Inter Club Council. This is the first year Crafton has been able to award $25,000 in scholarships for students who are majoring in science, technology, engineering, or math. “The Southern California Edison scholarships provide an incredible opportunity for our students to continue their studies,” said Michelle Riggs, director of the CHC Foundation. The 25 STEM scholarship recipients are Pargoal Arab (Moreno Valley), David Avila (Redlands), Brian Bales (Yucaipa), Samantha Blaylock (Beaumont), Vincent Camarena (Beaumont), Andrea Colombel (Mentone), Marlene Espinoza (Highland), Sabrina Ferras (Yucaipa), Aubrey Henricks (Yucaipa), Erick Herrera (Yucaipa), Damali Husbands (Beaumont), Elisya Incidis (Redlands), Andrew Jalbert (Mentone), Nathan Petreaca (Redlands), Ahlam Quaraan (Redlands), Thomas Ramirez (Redlands), Rachel Santiago (Yucaipa), Jesus Sida (San Bernardino), Raymond Smith (Yucaipa), Benjamin W. Stevens (Yucaipa), Lodi Toon (Redlands), Saleem Toon (Redlands), Aaron Trawick (Mentone), Katherine Vickstrom (Highland), and Kaleb Yates (Redlands).
