The Colton Joint Unified School District (CJUSD) will celebrate a special event dedicating the new math and science building at Colton High School (CHS) in memory of David R. Zamora, the long-time Colton resident and public servant who passed away in July 2011 and is fondly remembered by many for his dedication and contributions to his community. The ceremony will be at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Colton High School, 777 W. Valley Boulevard. The Colton Joint Unified School District’s Board of Education voted to name the building after Zamora, who served on the Board from 1997 to 2010 and was known for being a dedicated role model, fiscal leader and for his devotion to the district’s students. He served several terms as both President and Vice-President while on the board. Zamora was employed by the City of Colton for 28 years until his retirement in 2009. He served as the Director of Community Development, which included responsibility over the Planning Commission. In 2010, Zamora decided to conclude his time on the school board and ran a successful campaign for Mayor of the City of Colton, bringing the same dedication to the city that he brought to the school board. The David R. Zamora Building is a two-story, 46,794 square-feet building that sits on the corner of Valley Boulevard and Rancho Avenue. It has 30 classrooms, or 1,380 seats. The project was built with a budget of $18.6 million, including a combination of funds from voter-approved district bond Measures B & G, state matching funds, and capital facilities funds.
