News Update from Dr. Gutierrez (Councilman of District 4)

Please recognize a veteran for their service to our country and community! The City of Moreno Valley had an official Veteran’s Day recognition ceremony, Monday, November 11, 2013 at 3:30 p.m. at Veteran’s Memorial. The program included a wreath-laying ceremony and a proclamation naming Moreno Valley as a Purple Heart City. The city received a sustainability grant (SCAG) of approximately $150,000 to improve the Nason Street Corridor. This will improve mobility for pedestrians, bicyclists and public transit while maintaining traffic flows and reducing traffic conflicts on Nason. Last Saturday, the City’s “M” received a much-needed repainting. City Parks & Recreation Commissioner James Baker led a community project to upgrade the condition of the famous landmark with the generous assistance of Lowe’s Home Improvement and Visterra Credit Union. To reduce crime in District 4, as your councilman, I developed a Business Crime Prevention program to connect businesses and other entities with our city-wide camera program. This active collaborative partnership with the businesses will help prevent crime. Even more importantly, I met with the MVUSD superintendent and administrators to build a partnership and collaborate with the school district and city. Just this past week, I met with several constituents regarding their many concerns, from potholes to roads, police issues, and job creation. Several issues have been resolved by the city staff. Additionally, I am advocating for the city-led after-school music/art programs in our middle schools. Currently, schools have had a lack of funding, and I want to partner with the two school districts in our area, MVUSD and Val Verde, to bring free music and arts to our kids. It’s critical that our children in Moreno Valley have an outlet after school and are exposed to the arts. I am also looking at ways to enhance the city’s Employment Resource Center to find jobs for the 10,600 unemployed residents of Moreno Valley.
