Gathering in groups of 10 at schools, churches, and homes, more than 1,000 parents from across Moreno Valley are currently reading the same book: 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families, by Stephen R. Covey. The enthusiastic response to this first MVUSD Community Book Read has been overwhelming. “This is both a community-building event and an important opportunity for many people to make some positive changes in their family dynamic,” said MVUSD Superintendent Dr. Judy D. White. “As educators, we know that family life has a tremendous effect on student success.” Dr. White said she chose the book because she hears from many parents who express a desire for a more strong, loving and harmonious family life. “We all want to be good parents and grandparents, and we all want our children to trust and confide in us,” she explained. “When those things happen at home, we see the positive results play out at school.” Within just a few days following the announcement of the Community Book Read, more than 100 leaders had stepped forward offering to organize and host their groups. In addition to teachers, principals and parents, group leaders include members of the MVUSD School Board and administration and other community leaders, such as members of the city council and city administration, Moreno Valley College President Dr. Sandra Mayo, and faith-community leaders. Reading groups quickly filled with both English- and Spanish-speaking parents. Making use of grant funding from San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, The California Endowment and Altura Credit Union, MVUSD purchased more than 1,000 copies of 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families, including every Spanish-language version available. “I think we probably surprised the booksellers by buying up all their Spanish copies!” said Dr. White. The Community Book Read will continue over the upcoming Spring Break and through the week of April 25 when reading groups will meet and discuss what they’ve read. The culminating event will be a free presentation by the late author’s brother, Dr. John Covey, on Thurs., April 28, from 6-8 p.m. at the Moreno Valley Conference and Recreation Center.
