Junior University Presents Pinocchio

What began as a small summer children’s show in a husband and wife’s backyard has since grown exponentially, as Junior University Musical Theatre takes the stage for their 51st season. This year, Junior University presents Pinocchio—the well-known story by Carlo Collodi of the wooden puppet who comes to life and embarks on a journey which teaches him the importance of selflessness and honesty. Opening night, Friday, June 19, proved to be a success as seats quickly filled and the audience greeted performers with welcoming applause. Ranging from 9 to 30 years old, all 75 of the performers acted, sang and danced to 24 musical numbers throughout this nine-scene play. Their turn-of-the-century garb and intricate set design helped transport audience members back in time, with the addition of talking animals and a magical floating fairy. Director Geri Marquez said it has been a long process, as they began auditioning kids back in May, followed by six long, hard weeks of rehearsal. “It’s a wonderful experience. Just working with kids and helping them to develop a show and they’re getting so much value out of it,” Marquez said. Choreographer Kathryn Harnitchek first got involved with JU back in 2007, when she auditioned for Alice in Wonderland. Two years ago, Harnitchek became the choreographer’s apprentice, which ultimately led to her current role. As an undergrad, studying to become an elementary school teacher, it seems to be a perfect fit. “The kids have blown my mind in every way. They’re so cooperative and enthusiastic. My experience with the whole staff and whole cast has been positive. I’m very blessed to have this experience.” Volunteers Kathy Saurette and Chris Tickell both have children involved with the production and said it’s a great experience, both noting the family-like feel. Tickell is no stranger when it comes to working with kids, as a former principal. He said, “It’s great because you feel like you’re a part of something that’s been a part of the city for 51 years … This is the closest the kids will get to a professional production.” Performances are held Tuesday through Sunday, at 8:15 p.m. at Perris Hill Bowl in San Bernardino. The show will continue until Aug. 3.
