As an educator, I have witnessed the positive influence of students taking ethnic studies.
Living in a diverse, multicultural society, as we do, Ethnic Studies reflects the history and reality of students of color, and is inclusive of their contributions to America.
Research studies have demonstrated when students learn their history and that of other cultures, there has been an increase in: 1. high school graduation rates 2. self-esteem and confidence 3. student interest and engagement 4. college achievement and success, to name a few.
With California’s school population comprising three-fourths of students of color, I strongly urge the implementation of Ethnic Studies into the school curriculum.
