Shad Boal, a long-time resident and local small business owner, has officially announced his candidacy for Grand Terrace City Council. Proud of his deep commitment to the community, Boal aims to fill one of the three open seats in the upcoming general election.
Born and raised in Alta Loma, Shad moved to Grand Terrace in late 2001 and has since been an active member of the community. A proud father of four, aged 16 to 22, Shad's children have grown up in this close-knit community. "My wife brought in the "brunettes" and I had the "blondies and that's just how we describe us. I love this community, the small hometown feel of it," shared Shad.
The motivation to run for City Council stems from his strong Conservative family values and a desire to preserve the unique character of Grand Terrace. Shad emphasized his deep-rooted family values and active involvement in community events and youth groups. Boal shared " I have served as a soccer coach for eight years and a Cub Scout Leader for six years. Additionally, I have chaired the Freedom Wall project for several years, honoring the city’s veterans." Shad went further explaining how he and is his wife Christy, "we do house decoration, where the house lights are set to music. We do that primarily for Veteran's Day, Memorial Day and Christmas...(we) just love being able to give back to our Veterans."
Boal describes his significant role in organizing and supporting various city events, including Light Up GT and Grand Terrace Community Days. His hands-on approach is evident in his volunteer work, where he often spends long hours ensuring these events run smoothly. Boal’s dedication extends beyond festive occasions; he is an advocate for preparedness and public safety and is actively involved in the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). He stressed the importance of being ready for emergencies, from having a bug-out bag to knowing CPR and first aid training. "As a matter of fact, I have to do some training right here with the City on the 25th, CPR and First Aid Training," volunteered Boal.
As an electrician and small business owner, Boal noted that he contributes to the community in practical ways, performing emergency repairs and maintenance work for those in need. He shared his philosophy of "giving back" and leading by example, hoping to inspire others to volunteer and engage with the community. “I’ve been on the crew to help replace (fallen) trees...it’s really fun. I invite people to go (volunteer) because it gives you a little pride,” Shad said, “If you give the community a sense of empowerment, they’ll do more.”
When asked about his priorities, Boal stated he would focus budgetary expenses on law enforcement. “Public safety is the number one goal,” said Boal. Increasing the number of police officers and supporting a proposed law enforcement ballot initiative to raise sales tax by 1% in November are his top concern. "I get that nobody wants to pay more taxes, but here's the thing, we already pay less sales tax than the cities around us. So we'll just be matching what they [surrounding cities] have and it will go to provide a safer community."
Boal also stressed his belief in transparency and accountability in local government, regularly attending City Council meetings and sharing information with the community through social media. “I don’t want this place to become just another number,” Boal said. “How do I plan on doing it? By getting involved! If you have a question, send it to me. If you don't have time to log in to the City Council meeting, I'll still ask the question because you need an answer.”
Boal describes his approach to decision-making as community-focused and common sense. He believes in evaluating the needs of the city as a whole and planning for the future, aiming to work with fellow Councilmembers to keep Grand Terrace fiscally balanced and self-sufficient. Boal hopes his commitment to engaging with residents, understanding their concerns, and finding practical solutions will set him apart as a candidate. "Get involved with your community, know what's going on, talk to those people who do know. I posted a picture [on social media] where the City Council is almost empty. If you're worried about [where the money goes], then why aren't you here? Get involved," encourages Boal.
In addressing social issues like affordable housing and homelessness, Boal emphasizes the importance of inspiring individuals to improve their circumstances while providing necessary support and resources. He advocates for programs that offer treatment and training, helping people become self-reliant.
